PE and Sport

We are delighted to share that Greenfields has been awarded the AfPE Quality Mark with Distinction – a prestigious national award that recognises the strength and quality of Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) within a school. This achievement reflects our commitment to providing high-quality PE experiences that support not only physical development, but also pupils’ wellbeing, confidence, and wider learning across the curriculum. The award has taken a year of hard work to achieve, following a rigorous process of self-evaluation and external validation.  It celebrates the outstanding work taking place every day in our school.
Across Oakwood and Greenfields, we are committed to learning for life. This means, we recognise the skills and attributes children develop through physical activity impacts their physical and mental health in their future lives.  Learning does not stop after leaving Green Oaks and so we are committed to fostering a sense of community by bringing children/whole school together to play, learn, compete and celebrate. We are always seeking to build children’s confidence and leadership skills engage in physical activity as part of their everyday life.

From Reception to year 6, children will experience a variety of physical opportunities within PE lessons and across other subjects, during breaktimes, clubs and through competitive opportunities in and outside of school. This breadth of physical activity and physical education supports every child to connect with their environment and develops the whole child. Our balanced programme is essential to the development of the whole child.

Our whole school RESPECT values are firmly embedded in the PE curriculum. We develop competence in a range of physical skills, continuing to concentrate on fundamental movement skills in Lower Key Stage Two and transferring these to a variety of physical activities by the end of Key Stage 2.

Their experiences will enable pupils to:

  • Allow children to love being active
  • Build their confidence to take part in physical activity
  • Encourage children to live healthy lives both physically and mentally
  • Develop their creativity and leadership skills
  • Be open-minded to the various talents of each and every one of us and celebrate individual achievement with a focus on personal improvements.
  • Develop competence in a range of physical skills concentrating on fundamental movement skills at Oakwood and transfer these to a variety of sport related games and activities by the end of their time at Greenfields.

  • Analyse and evaluate in order to improve performances of themselves and peers
  • Develop teamwork and encourage children to make positive contributions

How is PE taught?

In Years 1-6, children receive 2 hours of PE a week. As core skills are repeated through different sports, children will understand how their learning links across lessons, terms and year groups.

PE planning is derived from the Get Set for Education scheme and teachers personalise the units and learning for specific pupils to enable every child to access the learning successfully. Vocabulary related to PE is directly taught and children have regular opportunities to use and apply this in their learning.

In Year R teachers target the skills from the EYFS Framework and also use Development Matters and their practitioner knowledge of child development to support them in developing a bespoke curriculum whereby they support and extend children through physical challenges in the environment and interactions from adults. PE is taught explicitly by class teacher on a weekly basis who teach the children fundamental skills in balance, dance, gymnastics and multi-skills.

At Oakwood, pupils continue to fundamental movement skills. They build on their learning in dance and gymnastics and target and striking and fielding games are introduced. In Year 2 children build further on the skills introduced in Year 1, giving them time to develop greater competency, control and confidence. Athletics and net and wall games are also introduced.

Year 3

At Greenfields, in Year 3, children start to apply the fundamental skills to more recognisable sports. We make use of our on-site tennis club and coaches are used to support the teaching and learning.

Clubs and Enrichment

We believe it is our role to support your child in finding the activity or sport to develop further outside of school or beyond their time at Greenfields. We offer a broad range of clubs, many run by Level 2 coaches, and provide free access to a club of their choice for any child whose family is eligible for pupil premium.
