Helping children to enjoy learning in the outdoors is very much of the culture and vision here at Green Oaks. This year, Greenfields Junior School ran a Year 3 history unit entirely outdoors. The unit focused on the Prehistoric age, from the Stone Age through to the Iron Age, and involved using fire safely to experience prehistoric cooking, creating Stone Age art using natural pigments, exploring prehistoric life through storytelling and role-play, building miniature settlements using twigs, clay, and natural materials, working in teams to construct shelters using teamwork and problem solving, handling and shaping clay and engaging in regular reflections. This project showed that outdoor learning can deliver high-quality curriculum outcomes. Two hours a week outdoors enhanced, not replaced, academic learning. When children connect with Nature, learning becomes deeper, calmer, and more meaningful. Most importantly, children didn’t just learn history – they felt it, remembered it, and owned it.
